Do you know Yuyi Morales?

Do you know Yuyi Morales?

I first discovered Yuyi through her book Viva Frida! in 2014.  The art was so beautiful, vibrant and different from anything I'd ever seen, I knew she was great!

Viva Frida

Frida Kahlo is one of my absolute faves!  I want my students to appreciate her work and influence as much as I do!  The art with puppets is absolutely beautiful.

Niño Wrestles the World

She does it again!  Fwap!  Crunch!  She writes and illustrates this fun book which will teach your little ones about cultural elements of Mexico.  It's so funny and my kids love it.

Dreamers

This is her latest work and it is just magic!  It's about Yuyi and her son and their experience as immigrants.  The text is lyrical and dreamlike.  The colors are vibrant and bold.  You have to have this book!

Enjoy these magical tales!!   If you'd like some resources for these, check out my TPT store!  Hope they're useful for you.

Women's History Month: Frida Kahlo

It's Women's History Month!

Why not do some lessons on Frida Kahlo?

Frida was a Mexican painter known for her surreal paintings and self-portraits. One book that I found to be an amazing teaching support is Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales.  This book is a 2015 Caldecott Honor book and Yuyi Morales won a 2015 Pura Belpre (Illustrator) award.

Viva Frida is a beautiful picture book by Yuyi Morales.  Very bright, simple text to describe her life.

At the end, it shows her painting.  I like that the book isn't ALL about the painting.  It shows different aspects of her personality.

The art is amazing.  Appropriate for k-5th grades. Enjoy!  If you'd like to do some lessons, I created a Frida Kahlo Emergency Sub Plan or mini-unit on TPT for $3. This sub pack is for those days when you can’t help being absent or you can use it as a mini-unit. It has 16 pages.  Enjoy!

Wordless Wednesday: Y Creo Arte

It's Wordless Wednesday!

Viva Frida by Yuyi Morales

I just love the art in this book!  Even more so, Yuyi Morales recently won two HUGE  awards: the Pura Belpre award 2015 Illustrator and a Caldecott Medal Honor Book for 2015.  Take a look at these beautiful illustrations.  I also love the simple bilingual language.
