Mathematical Mindsets

Growth Mindset for Math

Have you wondered why it's perfectly acceptable to say "I'm not good at math!" but it's not ok to say "I'm not good at reading."??  For some reason one is ok and the other is not.  Neither is ok!!  We need to help our students see that they could become good at math!

The guru for growth mindset and math is Jo Baoler, from Stanford University. She wrote several books on this topic. Better yet, check out her web site: youcubed  It's amazing!! Seriously.

Classroom Norms
Follow these norms in your math classroom to foster a growth mindset in math. Here is a link to a poster.
  1. Everyone can learn higher math!  It's for everyone!
  2. Mistakes are valuable.  They help us learn!
  3. Questions move our thinking.  Ask!
  4. Math is creative.  Think outside the box!
  5. Math needs to be talked about!  Collaborate and communicate!
  6. Go deep, not fast.
  7. Learning takes effort.  It's not a performance.
Math apps.
There are a lot out there that try to get kids to work so fast that they're not thinking!  Here are the apps that Jo Baoler suggests.  They emphasize thinking visually and deeply.   My favorite is Mancala!!

Close Reading Guides

Have you read Rain, Reign by Ann M. Martin?  It's an amazing book about Rose.
She was diagnosed with high functioning autism, which some call Asperger's Syndrome. She lives with her father and her dog, Rain. She loves homonyms, prime numbers and Rain.  It's a deeply moving book.  I also have guides for many more: The One and Only IvanWonder, Fish in a Tree and many more.

Back to School Team Building Activities

Looking to build trust and community in your classroom?  I hope these activities help you build that environment where your students feel loved, secure and supported.

Books for Back to School

Primary

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
This is a really heart warming book.  Great for the first day of school.

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
Chrysanthemum has great self confidence until that first day of school where kids think her name is funny.  Great for self esteem and acceptance.

David Goes to School by David Shannon
From the author of the popular "No, David!" books this is about his first day of school.  If you know David, this won't be one well behaved child!

Upper Grades

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Juby Blume
Peter is a fourth grader who has to deal with his little brother, Fudge!  And he has had it!!

The Fabled Fourth (and Fifth) Graders of Aesop Elementary by Candace Fleming
Funny books about a teacher and kids who are not typical.

Hope this helps you pick something out for that first day (week) of school!
