Can you tell which city this is?

Equivalent fractions activity

Equivalent Fractions

So my kids were having difficulty with equivalent fractions.  So I came up with an activity for them. I avoid making copies, if possible, so here is what I did:

First I had the kids trace a circle in the middle of a large page.  I used half a sheet of construction paper.   Then they divided the circle into eight equal portions.  We then put benchmark fractions into each eighth.  Benchmark fractions are common fractions kids should have in their heads.  Some examples are 1/2, 1/3, 2/3, 1/4, 3/4, 1/5, etc.. Knowing benchmark fractions helps kids develop  better fraction sense.

Then we labeled the chart "Equivalent Fractions".  That was the first clue they had as to what we were really doing.  Then we took blank newsprint and folded it into eight parts.  Then each student cut the paper into its eight blank parts.

Then we used paper clips and our own pencils to act as spinners.  When they landed on a benchmark fraction, they had to find an equivalent fraction.  They then used the newsprint to make a model. They also had to show how they figured out the equivalent fraction.  Here is one that is finished.

I hope this is helpful for you.  My kids had a lot of fun doing it and they reinforced their understanding of benchmark and equivalent fractions.  I avoid making copies if possible- lack of paper and the machines are always down- so this worked great!  Hope it's helpful for you.

IMWAYR: The Book With No Pictures by B.J.Novak

Monday Linky from Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers!

The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

Such a fun read!  I can see kids of all ages appreciating it but little ones will really get a kick out of this!
So the premise is that whoever is reading this book aloud has to follow the rules and read everything.  It doesn't matter what it says, the rule is the adult must say everything.  Even if it says "My only friend in the whole wide world is a hippo named Boo Boo Butt" !!!
Really cute book written by B.J.Novak from The Office.  You can see him read it aloud on YouTube here.  I also wrote a read aloud lesson plan using the gradual release and the reading strategy of asking questions.  You can find it in my TPT store here.  Super fun read.  Your kids will love it!

IMWAYR: Rain, Reign by Ann M.Martin

Rain, Reign by Ann M.Martin

Have you read Rain, Reign by Ann Martin?  I knew of Ann Martin from all her baby-sitter club books but I just love this book.  It's told from the point of view of Rose. She is obsessed with rules, homonyms and prime numbers.  You see, Rose has autism. She lives with her father who has his own demons to deal with. Rose loves and depends on her uncle and her dog, Rain.
Rose has to deal with many challenges: a distant father, a missing mother and a school that tries to help her but may not always understand what she's feeling or going through.
One day, Hurricane Susan hits their town and everything changes.  Rose is an amazing character.  You will fall in love with her.  Here is the link to the Macmillan Children's Publishing Group. Fast read and insightful.

Five for Friday!

So I saw the hashtag #bookaday on Twitter.  So this break, I tried to read as much as possible.  One of the books that I thought was really great was The Crossover.  It's written by Kwame Alexander.  Read my blog post for more info.

I have an Annual pass for Disneyland and went quite a bit during the holiday season. Love Disney!  Here's my favorite picture.  I used it for Wordless Wednesday.

Have you read Flora and Ulysses?  Its a Newbery winner by Kate DiCamillo.  I created a close reading guide for it.  It's on my TPT store.

Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures! This middle grade novel won the Newbery medal for 2014. The story is about Flora, a self-described cynic, who witnesses a tragedy/miracle in her neighbor’s backyard. She is able to revive the squirrel and names him Ulysses. The book is very funny but also tackles some serious issues such as divorce, abandonment issues and more. The book is written as part narrative and part graphic novel.

My favorite city in the world in Paris! I am so sad to hear about what they're going through right now.  My heart goes out to them.

Sigh, it's time to go back to work on Monday.  I know, I know, most of you went back this past Monday.  I shouldn't complain.  However... I feel very refreshed and can't wait to get back to my kids at Lucille Roybal-Allard Elementary!

IMWAYR: The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

What a powerful story.  It will definitely appeal to my boys.  This book is about twins, Josh and Jordan Bell who are basketball stars in their Junior high.
The novel is written is verse but in a hip-hop style.  It is about the first time the boys are moving apart from each other as a result of growing up.

It's also about family.  In spare language, you see the father and his relationship to the boys.   I especially love the chapter entitled Questions.  The book is interspersed with basketball rules such as the one above and definitions and how they connect to the story.
The story is compelling and rich. Kwame Alexander has an amazing facility with language. Boys will love it. And it's a fast read.  Try it out.

Reading for the Common Core Bookmark

This freebie is a bookmark referencing the Common Core.  The anchor standards for reading are separated into four areas: Key ideas and details, Craft and Structure, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas and Text Complexity and Range.  I added questions to each area to keep students focused while reading. I modified it and added another version with a bookworm.

It's free on my TPT store!  Enjoy!
