WW: Read Across America

Monday Linky from Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers!

Read Across America

It's time to celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday!
How is your school celebrating? At Lucille Roybal-Allard, we have events every day such as twin day and crazy sock day etc. We will also have a Scholastic book fair all week. Kids are so excited.  Then on Wednesday, we will be hosting a Family Literacy Night.  One of my students, Marissa, was chosen to read for the student author festival!! Teachers, also, host families as they read them a great book and do an activity with them.

I'll be reading Pop!: The Invention of Bubble Gum by Meghan McCarthy.  Check out her website here. Then we'll be testing out different types of bubble gum: Testing how long flavor lasts, which is most liked and which makes the biggest bubbles.  It'll be fun!
Some of my ideas.....

Flavors:
Which is your favorite?
Baseball, chiclets or double bubble?
Longest lasting?
Which has the longest lasting flavor?
Graphing:
Who can blow a bubble at all?
Measurement:
Who can blow the biggest bubble in your family?
How long can you stretch it?
You can get the whole unit here.

What's your favorite Dr. Suess read aloud?
Mine is hands down The Lorax.
I love the environmental message.
Here's my classroom door!

You haven't read it?!?  Whaaaat?
O.K., quick synopsis:
the Once-ler has arrived at a beautiful valley full of truffula trees, brown bar-ba-loots and swomee swans.  However because of his greed and carelessness, everything is destroyed.  He tells a passing kid his story and passes him the very last truffula seed.
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

Here's the original version from 1972 which I found on YouTube!

Happy Read Across America Week!

IMWAYR: Valentine books and Go Set a Watchman

Monday Linky from Teach Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers and Kathryn from Book Date!

I'm sure you're familiar with I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Spider?  Well, there is a text for Valentine's Day!  It's called There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose by Lucille Colandro. The plot structure is called a cumulative plot structure.  It's where events and characters keep repeating until it topples over.  It's also called a toppling story.

This tale is layered with Valentine elements such as roses, lace, candy and more.  It's cute and your students will be familiar with the structure.  If you're looking for I Know an Old Lady Who... books, Lucille Colandro has written a ton!

You've all seen Pete the Cat, right?  The books are by James Dean.  This new version, Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool is by Kimberly and James Dean.
It's about Pete who's a little too cool for Valentine's Day. His friend Callie explains to him that its about honoring special people in his life.  He goes home and sees the error of his ways.  However, he forgets to make one special card...for Callie!
Cute book.  I think kids will like it.  You can check out the Pete the Cat website.  Lots of cool stuff there.

On an adult level, just finished reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee.  Conflicted.  I didn't find it very well written.  Serious editing needed. Sigh.
